Sterling, VA — Jerry Torres on Saturday highlighted the urgent need to reform education for Virginia’s students, telling attendees of a summit on education that “woke ideology” had poisoned the state’s classrooms.

“I'm running for Congress because our children's education is deteriorating, and we all see it,” Torres said in a speech at the Oct. 12 event in Sterling, which was hosted by Women United to Save the Commonwealth. “It began decades ago when the woke ideology and indoctrination snuck into our schools behind our backs. We didn't even know what was going on. We had no idea what was going on.”

Torres — a retired U.S. Army Special Forces master sergeant who raised his daughter, Valeria, as a single parent after the passing of her mother — pointed to critical race theory (CRT) and efforts to inject a debate over transsexuality in classrooms as the chief culprits behind the plummeting quality of public education.

“Our schools are indoctrinating our kids in CRT, which is dividing them,” Torres said. “We are dividing our kids intentionally with CRT. Our schools are teaching sexual topics that are abnormal, perverse, and pornographic. I don't break easily — I can take most anything, but when I saw some of the material and read some of the material that kids are getting, even in sixth grade, I was disgusted. And it takes a lot to disgust me, but I was just broken and hurt. And our kids are going through that experience.”

He also faulted Rep. Don Beyer for co-sponsoring the Keeping All Students Safe Act, a proposal that would prevent teachers from separating bullies from other students.

“When I travel around the world — and I travel quite a bit — every country I go to says, ‘What the heck is going on in your schools?’” Torres said. “And they think it's ugly and weird. You know, there's a saying in most countries that goes something like this: When America sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold. … We need to plug our nose and quit doing that.”
